Every year the Environmental Working Group releases a report on the state of sunscreen. Often, it's quite scary: For example, they estimated that half of the sunscreens on the market aren't adequately shielding us from UVA rays, or that high SPF numbers are misleading to consumers about protection.

However, this year offered a glimmer of hope, as the FDA recently released their proposed regulation changes, and they were pretty substantial. (Read about it here!) And many of them were right in line with what the EWG has been advocating for over the last decade, including more research on specific ingredients and higher UVA protection standards.

Along with their report, they also released the full list of all EWG-approved safe SPFs. Well, we combed through all of it. Here, some of our favorites.

At the beach

Opt for things labeled "sport," as they are formulated to be more water-resistant (to withstand sweat). Since you'll be outdoors and probably getting a little wet, they'll be better at protecting you. However, reapplication standards still apply: Always apply after you get out of the water and towel off, and keep reapplying every 80 minutes, even if you don't get in the water. Bare Republic Mineral Sunscreen Sport Stick SPF 50 is great for on-the-go, and Juice Beauty Sport Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30 includes antioxidants to buffer free-radical damage.

For your kids

Only 27 options on the market right now made it onto their list. (Terrifying, no?) Children and baby options are often formulated gently for more sensitive skin, so if you fall into that category yourself, you might want to look in this section. Earth Mama's Kids Uber-Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen Lotion SPF 40 is made with colloidal oatmeal; Supergoop! Sunnyscreen 100% Mineral Lotion has green microalgae and chamomile; Babo Botanicals Baby Skin Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 has calendula. However, they do tend to have lower water resistance, so if you and your kid are sweating or getting into water, please be mindful that you need to reapply more frequently—every 40 minutes in some cases.

Anytime options

By now you should know to use SPF at all times. And these are great for barbecues, gardening, or just running errands midday. You'll want to feel comfortable, so I recommend products with hydrating ingredients and that cast as little white residue as possible. Try Beautycounter Countersun Mineral Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30 and Aveeno Positively Mineral Sensitive Skin Daily Sunscreen Lotion with SPF 50, which are both face and body products.
